What Is a Construction Daily Report?

A construction daily report (also called a site daily report or construction log) is a record of everything that happened on a job site during a single shift. It captures work completed, labour on site, equipment used, materials received, weather conditions, safety events, and instructions from the client or consultant.

For general contractors, it is the single source of truth that protects against disputes, supports progress claims, and keeps the office informed in real time.

Why Daily Reports Matter

  • Proof of work for client billing and variations
  • Early warning of delays, safety issues, and quality risks
  • Evidence if a dispute or claim arises
  • Real-time visibility for the office and project managers
  • Clear handover between shifts and site teams
  • Audit trail for inspections and compliance

Best Practices for Site Reports

01

Submit the same day

Fill the report before the site team leaves. Memory fades and evidence is harder to collect later.

02

Use photos with context

Every photo should include a description and the location. A photo without context proves little.

03

Quantify everything

Record planned vs executed quantities. This is the fastest way to spot productivity issues.

04

Keep it objective

Record facts, not opinions. Stick to what was observed, who was present, and what was done.

05

Sign and review

The report should be signed by the person who prepared it and reviewed by a supervisor or manager.

06

Store centrally

Keep reports in one place so the office, client, and QA team can find them instantly.
